GRACE – Growing Advanced Industrial Crops on marginal lands for Biorefineries – submitted in response to the call “BBI 2016.D2 – Improvement and adaptation of industrial crop varieties and novel sources of biomass to diversity biomass feedstock for biorefineries” is a CBE JU project that aims to optimize various miscanthus and hemp value chains.
Project objectives:
- Exploring the potential of miscanthus and hemp crops as a source of biomass for the bioeconomy. Both miscanthus and hemp are relatively untapped but offer an attractive business opportunity for farmers and industry. When grown on marginal, contaminated, or unused/abandoned land, impacts on food security can be minimized and the potential introduction of pollutants into the food chain can be prevented;
- To demonstrate and optimize the techno-economic feasibility and environmental sustainability of ten value chains based on miscanthus and hemp using marginal, contaminated and unused land on an industrial scale;
- Identify hemp varieties suitable for marginal lands and commercial miscanthus varieties available by the end of the project with different economically viable end uses creating a market push for the growth of the bioeconomy.
